Holm Bank Helps Haapsalu Yacht Club Launch a Sailing School

In Haapsalu, a town with a long history of sailing, children’s sailing training is being restarted. The initiative is being organised by Haapsalu Yacht Club, with the support of Holm Bank.

Three years ago, experienced sailor Erki Teras was elected Commodore of Haapsalu Yacht Club. He has promised to raise the level of sailing in Haapsalu and train a new generation of sailing athletes. “For some years, due to a lack of resources, children’s training was entrusted to Kalev Yacht Club. Now, we are ready to take on this work and the joy it brings, and we look forward to welcoming children to join Haapsalu Yacht Club’s sailing school,” said Erki Teras with excitement. “Without Holm Bank’s support, it is likely this plan would have been postponed to a more distant future. It’s an incredible feeling that a successful Estonian bank, originating from Haapsalu, sees potential in us and values our initiative,” expressed the club’s leader, showing appreciation for Holm’s involvement.

Holm Bank’s Commitment to Haapsalu

“Holm Bank has roots in Haapsalu, which gives the town a special place in our hearts. Many good initiatives, both in sport and other fields, have started here. We want to contribute so that, with Holm’s support, Haapsalu can nurture successful athletes who value health and active lifestyles, are ambitious, and can serve as role models for others,” said Kaspar Kalvet, CEO of Holm Bank.

What Does Sailing Offer?

“Sailing is a versatile activity – it’s much more than just a sport or a pastime at sea. It encompasses a range of skills and knowledge, from understanding boat equipment to making important decisions on the water. Sailing teaches responsibility, teamwork, and strategic thinking. It requires good physical fitness, quick reactions, and high stress tolerance – conditions at sea often demand swift and confident action, considering unexpected changes in weather and circumstances,” explained Erki Teras.

What Awaits Students at the Sailing School?

“A sailor’s summer is a busy one. Training usually begins in late April or early May, and the season in Estonia lasts until October. Practices are typically held once a day from Monday to Thursday, lasting about 2.5 hours, mostly spent on the water. During the school term, water-based training is somewhat less frequent.

When the Estonian season ends, there are opportunities to attend competitions and training camps in countries like Spain, Slovenia, Italy, and Greece. In the summer, competitions take place almost every weekend. Events lasting 2–3 days often mean children spend 6–8 hours a day on the water. We also organise ‘clinics’ for children, where professional sailors conduct intensive training sessions. These usually last 2–3 days, with about 6 hours of sailing and 2 hours of theory each day.

In the winter, children attend swimming lessons and take part in group running sessions. When ice conditions allow, they sail ice yachts – a tradition that originated in Haapsalu,” explained the club’s Commodore.
