Balancing Legal Precision, Business Objectives and the Human Perspective

“I have learned to truly value flexibility and a solution-oriented mindset. It is possible to move forward even in situations that at first seem impossible. I believe that even when it feels like there is no way, a solution can still be found – because in the end, there is always a way,” says Sarmi Värv, Head of Legal and Debt Collection at Holm Bank, who will soon mark eight years with the company.

“When I joined, the company was still called Koduliising and was primarily known for Liisi hire purchase. At the same time, preparations for obtaining a banking licence were well underway. It was an exciting period – all employees were actively involved in developing new systems and even in selecting the bank’s name. Already then, I felt that people’s opinions and contributions genuinely mattered. Today, that belief is firmly rooted and continues to be reinforced,” Sarmi recalls.

Building a Professional Career in a Small Town

“I am probably one of those who have, in a way, grown up within the bank – my professional journey truly began at Holm’s office in Haapsalu after completing my Master’s degree.”

Sarmi acknowledges that opportunities in a small town can be limited, and she considers herself fortunate to have received an offer from a local financial company, even though her previous experience consisted mainly of her studies and internships at a court, a law firm and a notary’s office.

Growth and Variety Keep the Work Engaging

“What attracted me to Holm in the early years – and continues to inspire me today – is the company’s clear commitment to growth and continuous improvement. Progress and forward momentum are what give me the most energy in my work. I do not thrive in environments that become stagnant or overly comfortable; I perform at my best when faced with complex and demanding situations,” Sarmi says.

She notes that she has never experienced a moment of boredom at Holm. An environment characterised by constant change – evolving regulation, developments in case law and organisational growth – requires continuous learning and adaptability, yet it is precisely this dynamic nature that makes the work so engaging.

“Preparing internal procedures, advising different departments on legal matters, overseeing data protection, leading the litigation and enforcement unit, developing that area, and heading the Legal and Debt Collection Department,” Sarmi lists as key milestones in her professional journey.

“From a personal perspective, I value most the opportunity to grow through responsibility and experience. At the bank, I gained my first experience of representing the organisation in court. I was entrusted with responsibility and later with leadership roles.”

Over time, she explains, this has given her a comprehensive understanding of how the bank operates as an organisation, where it is essential to take into account diverse perspectives and areas of expertise while maintaining a broader strategic view.

Balance and Team Development

“Today, what excites and fulfils me most is the opportunity to influence the bigger picture and contribute to the development of both people and processes. As Head of Legal and Debt Collection at the bank, my role is to strike a balance between legal precision, business objectives and the human perspective.”

Leading her team, she takes great pleasure in their growth and achievements, and in the courage they show when successfully dealing with complex situations.
