Why make a deposit with Holm Bank?

The biggest advantages of a fixed-term bank deposit are security, a guaranteed interest rate and simplicity. A deposit opened with a bank is protected by the state Guarantee Fund up to €100,000. The interest rate is known in advance and guaranteed for the entire deposit period.

You do not have to keep your savings at your home bank. Before making a decision, it is worth comparing the offers of all banks, as interest rates may vary significantly. With a larger amount or a longer period, this can make a noticeable difference to the interest income you earn.

At Holm, you can make a deposit for a period from one month to five years with Estonia’s best deposit interest rates. If you are depositing a larger amount, it may be wise to divide the money between several deposits. This way, if you unexpectedly need access to your money, you can use part of it while leaving the rest to continue earning interest.

Frequently asked questions

1. Who can open a term deposit with Holm Bank and how can I do it?
As a private customer, you can open a term deposit with Holm Bank if you are at least 18 years old and a resident of Estonia.

To open a deposit, log in to Holm Bank self-service, register as a customer if necessary, and select the deposit amount and term. You will also need to provide information about the source of the funds, choose your payout preferences and sign the deposit agreement. Then transfer the deposit amount to your customer account with Holm Bank.

The customer account is an account with Holm Bank linked to your personal reference number and is used for payments between you and the bank. It is not a current account and cannot be used for everyday banking transactions.
2. Does Holm need to be my main bank to open a term deposit?
No. You can open a term deposit with Holm Bank even if you use another bank for your everyday banking. You do not need to change your banking habits or use any other Holm Bank products.

You can open the deposit in our self-service and transfer the deposit amount to your customer account with Holm Bank. At the end of the deposit term, we will also transfer the deposit amount together with the accrued interest to this account.
3. When does the deposit agreement take effect?
The deposit agreement takes effect once you have signed it and the deposit amount has been received in your customer account with Holm Bank within 7 calendar days of opening the deposit. The deposit amount must be transferred from a current account held in your name.

All other applicable conditions must also be met, including, where necessary, identity verification and providing information about the source of funds. You can make the transfer using the payment link or the payment details shown in the self-service.

The deposit term and interest accrual begin when the deposit agreement takes effect. This means that the sooner you transfer the funds, the sooner the actual deposit term begins. If all conditions, including the transfer of the deposit amount, are not met within 7 calendar days, the agreement will not take effect and will be cancelled automatically.

Please make the payment in good time. Transfers from other Estonian banks are generally received on the same day if the payment order is submitted before 16:30. Payments made in the evening, at weekends or on public holidays are generally received on the next business day. Please note that transfers of larger amounts may take longer.
4. In what order do deposit agreements take effect?
If you have entered into more than one deposit agreement, they take effect in the order in which they were signed. This means that the next deposit will only become active once the previous agreement has taken effect.

If the earlier agreement is still subject to an additional check or the deposit amount has not yet been received, any subsequent deposits will remain pending until their turn, even if the required amount is already available in your customer account.
5. When does the deposit start earning interest and when is the interest paid?
The deposit starts earning interest once the deposit amount has been received, all other applicable conditions have been met and the deposit has become active, meaning that the deposit agreement has taken effect.

As a rule, Holm pays the interest at the end of the deposit term and transfers it to your customer account with Holm Bank. If the deposit term is at least 12 months, you can also choose to receive interest payments annually, unless you have selected automatic renewal with interest.
6. What happens when the deposit term ends?
At the end of the deposit term, we will transfer both the deposit amount and the accrued interest to your customer account with Holm Bank. From there, you can use the funds to open a new deposit or transfer them back to the current account at another bank from which the funds were originally received. If you have selected automatic renewal, the deposit will be renewed for the same term as under the original agreement.

For private individuals who are Estonian tax residents, interest earned on deposits is subject to income tax. When the interest is paid, Holm withholds the applicable income tax and pays it to the Estonian Tax and Customs Board on your behalf.

If you use an investment account, you can defer the payment of income tax. To do so, indicate in the self-service when opening the deposit that the funds originate from an investment account. At the end of the deposit term, the deposit amount and interest will be transferred to your customer account with Holm Bank. From there, you can either place the funds in a new deposit or transfer them back to your investment account. Holm Bank does not offer investment accounts.
7. How does automatic renewal work and what interest rate applies?
If you have selected automatic renewal, the deposit will be renewed for the same term and you will not need to enter into a new deposit agreement.

The standard interest rate applicable on the renewal date will apply to the new deposit term. For deposits held by private customers, an automatic renewal bonus of 0.10 percentage points will be added to this rate. For example, if the applicable interest rate at the start of the new term is 3%, the deposit will be renewed at an interest rate of 3.1%.
8. Can I terminate a term deposit early and what happens to the interest?
Yes. You can terminate your deposit early in Holm Bank self-service. As a rule, we will transfer the deposit amount to your customer account within two banking days after you confirm the termination request.

Please note that if you terminate the deposit early, you will lose the interest accrued during the deposit term. Before terminating the deposit, it is therefore worth considering whether you need access to the funds immediately or whether it would be more beneficial to wait until the deposit reaches maturity.

When opening a deposit, you may also consider splitting the total amount across several deposits. This gives you the flexibility to terminate one deposit early if necessary while leaving the others in force.
9. Why may Holm ask about the source of the funds being deposited or request identity verification?
Banks are legally required to know their customers and understand the background of their transactions. For this reason, Holm Bank may ask where the funds being deposited come from and, where necessary, request documents confirming the source of the funds.

We may also ask you to complete additional identity verification by video through Veriff. In this case, we will send you a personal link by email. To complete the identity verification, you will need a device with a camera and a valid identity document.
10. Does Holm offer the best deposit interest rates in Estonia?
As an Estonian bank, our aim is to offer local customers some of the best deposit interest rates for growing their savings. In most cases, we offer the highest interest rates among Estonian banks across all deposit terms.

You can compare deposit terms and interest rates on the websites of different banks. A useful overview is also available in the deposit interest rate comparison published on minuraha.ee, the consumer information website of the Estonian Financial Supervision and Resolution Authority.
11. Is a term deposit with Holm protected by the Estonian Guarantee Fund?
Yes. Deposits are protected by the Estonian Guarantee Fund up to €100,000 per depositor. This means that deposits with Holm are covered by the same deposit guarantee principles as deposits with other banks registered in Estonia.

You can find the detailed terms and conditions in the Depositor Information Sheet.
